Dr. Hall, I am trying to locate a cosmetic dentist in western Massachusetts. Would you recommend one in this area? I visited Aspen Dental in West Springfield, MA today, however, I was not comfortable in making a decision after the visit. Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Meanwhile, I will say this as a rule of thumb. Stay away from corporate dental clinics like Aspen Dental. There is no way that an excellent cosmetic dentist would go to work for a clinic like this. They are geared for what is called “production dentistry,” meaning the focus is on getting the maximum profit out of the dentistry they do while maintaining an “acceptable” level of care. An excellent cosmetic dentist has a completely different focus, which is in providing the most beautiful, long-lasting dentistry with pride in craftsmanship.<\/p>\n
We had a dentist in New York that we recommended on mynewsmile, based on photographs of his work. He moved to Florida and asked that we recommend him in his new location. When we learned that he was working for one of these chain dental clinics, we pulled our recommendation and wrote to him and explained why. You cannot take the time and care required to produce beautiful dentistry in a corporate, large clinic setting. The way they are structured and managed is simply incompatible.<\/p>\n
