Dr Hall,
I recently got porcelain veneers and was wondering if my filthy habit of smoking will cause them to stain. Also, will red wine affect them as well? I asked my dentist, who I believe is excellent and he said no. Just looking for another qualified opinion. Thank you.

Geoff,
Porcelain veneers are very stain-resistant, more so than your natural teeth, so you should be fine. But they can get some stain around the edges, where the bond between the veneer and the tooth is. You can read more about stained porcelain veneers on our web site. We also have pages for tobacco stains on teeth and coffee stains on teeth, and about tooth stains in general.
I always gave my porcelain veneer patients a tube of Supersmile toothpaste, just to help insure that they would keep them looking as beautiful as possible.
