Question:
Is it true that Lumineers can look bulky since the tooth is not filed down?
Vanessa in New York
Vanessa,
Yes. While the manufacturer of Lumineers is doing a great job of building awareness of cosmetic dentistry procedures, and what they are saying is technically correct, they do create a misconception about a couple of issues. This making the teeth appear bulkier is a real issue. That’s why I recommend that, if you a considering Lumineers, that you go to an expert cosmetic dentist who can do a variety of cosmetic procedures, including whitening and other brands of porcelain veneers, and will more likely give you an honest appraisal of whether or not Lumineers will work for you, and give you the full scoop on all your options. I have seen many stories where people go through this procedure and then are aghast when they see what they end up looking like.
Lumineers are good for many situations, but this bulkiness needs to be explained honestly to the patient. Also, their ability to cover dark teeth is another problem. But for others, they work great. Also, the idea that Lumineers can be done without shaving any of the teeth beforehand is an exaggeration. Many Lumineers still require some tooth reduction.
Any expert cosmetic dentist knows how to do Lumineers. For an honest answer of what they will do to your smile, that’s where I think you should go.
